Turning the corner

So, I finally feel like the craziest and most stressful days of the summer are behind me. May is always the worst month for things going wrong here at WP&YR, but this past May was particularly nutty. BUT, it is now June and I feel like I am slowly being released from the clutches and am looking ahead to what else the summer has in store.

So, while I was super stressed out the last month and a half, I haven't really been able to focus too much on creating anything. And I've been super cranky about it.I did do a couple things, one of which I will show off today.

It's my ridiculously long wrap made from about 6 skeins of Cascade Jewell that I got on clearance at WEBS a couple months back. I was on the fence about the color, but decided that it would probably be okay once woven. I was also curious how the thick/thin texture of the yarn would play out in a woven piece. I like everything about it except the length. When I hang it around my neck, the fringes almost reach the floor. And I'm not exactly what you'd call short, although I have shrunk down to about 5'11'' over the last few years.

I still need to deal with the fringe, as well as take off about a foot and a half of the length. As with my first project, I'm hoping it will look less like a table cloth and more like a snuggly wrap after I throw it in the wash.
Although I haven't been creating much, I have, however, been accumulating more yarn. Go figure, huh? I guess I'm stockpiling for the coming winter. Plus, I had told myself that I wasn't going to indulge in WEBS' Anniversary Sale, but at the last minute I decided I couldn't pass on the deals they were having. And a girl can't have too much of the worsted weight workhorse known as Cascade 220, right?
Here is my delicious box of Cascade....I'm already dreaming of creating some brightly colored felted bags out of the contents of this box.
Here it is all laid out on my bed...I love all the deep vivid colors...I've been going through a mildly obsessive shawl phase lately. I haven't created one yet, I've just been poring over pages of them on Ravelry and plotting my path. So far I haven't picked out a pattern, but I picked out some Malabrigo Sock yarn for this next venture. I *LOVE* this red.
I've been wanting to make Berroco's Juliana for a while now, and with the WEBS sale I was finally able to nab some cheap Ultra Alpaca Light. I got 11 skeins of it in Blue Glasynys, a deep teal blue. Now I just have to find the time.

AND, because I thought it would be a good idea at the time, I got another loom. My first one that I got for my birthday is awesome, but it's a little bit large in our small home and I find it very hard to keep it downstairs (where I am 90% of the time) and not have it be in the way. I've been reading good things about the Schacht Flip, so I decided to get one in the 15" size. I think it's going to be perfect for the shawls/scarves that I have on my list to make. And if I want to make anything wider, I can always bring out the 32" Ashford. Until then, it will be safely tucked away upstairs waiting for a time when we have a bigger house to put all my crafty things in!

I'll hopefully be able to warp the Flip this week and see how it goes. I'll be sure to post whatever I end up making!

  1. Hmm, what to do about your too-long wrap? What about felting it? Not sure what you would end up with, but... Also not sure how you shorten a piece of weaving? Oh dear, I'm not being very helpful, am I, but I will say that your yarn haul is yummy!

Good luck with the smaller loom; I have a 32" Kromski, and I have enough house-space for it, but I still have not an iota of decent weaving to show for it. I want to weave, but knitting always seems so seductive...

  2. The wrap looks gorgeous! Shrunk down to 5'11"? Wow. (I'm 5'11", too.)

  3. Love the yarn haul - you've got a lot of beautiful work ahead of you! Would you consider sharing your "pattern" or at least the schematic of your Noro Granny throw? I'm trying to copy it, but wondered about the details...

  4. Could you just pull out the part you don't need like you would with your header? I love the purple, it's such a deep and rich colour.
